Rome is freaking hot right now. In fact, I cannot recall a heatwave this bad since 2003. Then again, I tend to repress temperature-related discomfort, so I may be totally wrong. Anyway, when it’s this hot, one must eat gelato — and lots of it. I’m talking at least two portions a day. Granita is a valid substitute, obviously.

A couple of months back, I wrote this piece for Budget Travel about some of my favorite Roman gelaterie. Word count restrictions and editorial choices meant I couldn’t feature every place I love. Here are some additional suggestions:

Gelateria Corona
Lately, I have been frequenting Gelateria Corona, located in Largo Arenula on the edge of Largo Argentina, on a daily basis. It is run by two exceedingly rude sisters who are as dedicated to making excellent gelato and granita as they are to being miserable–ironically, their father Giancarlo Corona of Gelateria Aracoeli is the nicest man on the planet. I am fully obsessed with Corona’s pistacchio granita, either on its own or mixed with almond. They also have an unusual array of fruit flavors inspired by Latin America.

Il Gelato di Claudio Torcè
Maestro Claudio Torcè has taught his craft to some of the city’s leading artisans including Maria Agnese Spagnuolo of Gelateria Fatamorgana. He makes high quality product in his lab in San Paolo, which supplies his shops on Viale Aventino 59 and Viale dell’Aeronautica 105. His flavors run the gamut from traditional to whimsical. On a recent trip I had black sesame and almond/lemon (pictured above).

Al Settimo Gelo
I have heard claims that Al Settimo Gelo on Via Vodice 21 in Prati is Rome’s best gelateria. I absolutely disagree. Readers know where my allegiances lie. But I will concede that Al Settimo Gelo is very very good. On a recent visit I tried “Iraniano” (ground pistacchios, saffron, and rose water), pistacchio, peanut, and chocolate/hazelnut. They keep their gelato a bit too cold in my opinion and while the quality is high, I still prefer nearby Fatamorgana on Via Bettolo any day of the week.

Greed
Let me preface this one with a disclaimer. I go to Greed for the good ingredients and weird flavors. I don’t always enjoy the outcome. Dario Rossi, Greed’s owner, makes gelato out of absolutely everything, as longs the ingredients are fair trade. Take cacio e pepe (pecorino cheese and black pepper), risotto di porcini (porcini mushrooms with rice), carrot, and celery, for example. If you don’t want to make the trip out to Via Vestricio Spurinna 97 near the Numidio Quadrato stop, you can find his creations at Campagna Amica’s Farmers Markets in and around Rome.

  • If it’s any consolation Katie, we’re having the most hellish heat wave here in the metro NYC area that I can EVER remember. And…we barely have a decent gelateria to go to! lol

  • That is true about NY, it has been even hotter here than there. But while we have no gelato (sad face) we have a lot more air conditioning! While normally I think we over-aircondition in the US, there are times I am *very* grateful for the invention!

  • Just discovered Torce last week and it’s amazing! Also, his cones are so good. I wonder where he gets them? Greed’s pea ice cream has got to be one of the grossest things I’ve ever tasted.

    @Angie i like it fine but i cannot honestly remember the last time i had one there. 2005? the time has come for another!

    @Elizabeth the cones are so good! last year i tried the pea ice cream and i seriously thought i would puke. it is unbelievably nasty.


  • Katie–it is that blissful thing that for some reason everyplace in the states overuses. To the extent that you end up needing to carry around sweaters in the summer because otherwise you freeze inside when it is 100 degrees outside! ;)

    That said, I really missed it when I spent last summer in Napoli and Urbino. Especially when I passed out from heat exhaustion in the Biblioteca Nazionale…


  • Katie i am going to publicly shame myself here- but confession is good for you, right? whenever my mum and sisters visited, we would hang out in Campo de’ Fiori *a lot* and one thing we really craved was a gelato. the only gelato place there is Blue Ice- and yerp, that’s what we had- Blue Ice. but…but…but…there was no other choice…
    so we dont commit this sacrilege again- any advice for a gelateria in that area? ie really close to the piazza?

    Re porcini gelato, the place near via capo d’africa also offers that flavour (is it on via celimontana?) do you know the name/place?

    Re l Settimo Gelo= I am with you. I do like their nocciola- quite a lot, but i would not rate it the #1 gelateria in Rome (says the girl who eats Blue Ice near Campo de’ Fiori).

    Shayma, the closest place that I recommend is Gelateria Corona in Largo Arenula. Their gelato and granita is insanely good, high quality and organic. It is around a 5 minute walk from Campo. Nearby Alberto Pica (via della Seggiola) is artigianale and much loved by others, but I dont always love it and the last gelato I had there was freezer burned!

  • Katie scusa il disturbo ma sai se il gelato di Claudio Torce’ in Viale Aventino, o in via dell’Aeronautica e’ aperto anche la domenica in questi giorni di agosto? Vorrei andarci con degli amici per un aperitivo fresco e sfizioso ma non riesco a trovare un numero di telefono del locale… grazie e comunque!

    sai che ha aperto anche al centro commerciale Le Terrazze ed ad Ostia? Probabilmente quelle 2 sede sono aperti anche la domenica in questi giorni di agosto. almeno speriamo!
