Naples is a city for eaters. I prove this with every visit. This weekend, I traveled to Naples to visit some churches and several subterranean archaeological sites. Along the way, I sampled some amazing food.
Yesterday I had lunch with a couple of friends at Cantina della Tofa on Vico della Tofa, just off Via Toledo, in the Spanish Quarter. The restaurant was simple and quaint and it was run by an efficient and young staff. We each ordered quite different first courses. I had the soup with spinach and lentils and my friends ordered risotto with pumpkin and blue cheese and lasagna. All three dishes were excellent, each prepared with seasonal vegetables. We expected the second courses to be just as good and they certainly were. I opted for the veal rolled with prosciutto while my fellow food aficionados shared squid in red sauce and provolone stuffed with seasonal Neapolitan greens. Wishing to save room for gelato at Gay Odin in Spaccanopoli, we chose to share a pear tort smothered in chocolate sauce. We left feeling satisfied both by the excellent food and the knowledge that we had found yet another excellent and authentic Neapolitan trattoria.
