I absolutely love the aperol spritz. Jess introduced us to it in Padova.

The best Aperol spritz we had on our last trip to Italy was at the Four Seasons in Florence; I swear they added something other than just Aperol and Prosecco, but I never got to ask. The olive garnish seems odd at first, but it goes so well!

@nonna im a huge fan as well, and much prefer aperol to campari. did you know they are owned by the same company?
@Tom hmm i wonder. love the olives with my spritz too!

Thanks for this — was able to check out Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fa’. It’s a start! They had no dubbles or brown beers, but was able to try a lot that’s nowhere to be found stateside. Birrificio’s Bock is nice.
Also, Aperol … is it blood orange flavored (among other herbs, I presume)? I’d never made that flavor connection up until recently after having arance rosse juice, then an aperol soda…

If you are still in Rome and want to taste Italian beers, Open Baladin has something like 140 Italian beers to choose from and Bir&Fud across the street from Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fa’ has an Italocentric beer list. Im not sure if either are open right now, due to the summer holiday. If you get a chance, hit up Johnny’s Off License near S Giovanni. That place is badass and they can hook you up with info on where to find great Italian brews in the States. They are open, tho only in the evenings. If you are based in/near NYC, Chicago, Philly, or San Fran, this is a helpful resource for finding beers from Italy and elsewhere: http://www.beermenus.com/
Aperol is bitter orange flavor, and it does have that great blood orange pulp flavor but that must be artificial coloring. It is the red velvet cake of herbal liquors. There are lots of medicinal herbs, and I believe rhubarb, too. I also taste something in their that evokes tonic. The recipe for Aperol is secret but if I figure out other ingredients Ill let ya know. Cheers!

good piece, Katie, though I never quite took a shining to ES hotel. i prefer the Roman-stand-in-a-piazza-with-a-wine-glass aperitivo. x shayma
