Otlu Peynir

Otlu peyniri is a cheese from Van, a city in eastern Anatolia set on a lake of the same name. It is pungent and super salty and the herbs mixed into it add a garlicky flavor. I had a big helping of it this morning at Van Kahvaltı Evi in Cihangir where I met my friend Şemsa for breakfast. Between otlu peyniri, white cheese, string cheese, and kaymak, we certainly got our recommended daily allowance of dairy today.

How I miss otlu peynir (note the missing last “i” – it is there only if you say “Van’in otlu peyniri” – can’t explain the grammar rules behind it, but just believe me
). The portière in the building where my parents live comes from Van and every time some relative visits him or he goes home, he brings my parents some otlu peynir. I especially love it on/between warm bread….
