Otlu peyniri is a cheese from Van, a city in eastern Anatolia set on a lake of the same name. It is pungent and super salty and the herbs mixed into it add a garlicky flavor. I had a big helping of it this morning at Van Kahvaltı Evi in Cihangir where I met my friend Şemsa for breakfast. Between otlu peyniri, white cheese, string cheese, and kaymak, we certainly got our recommended daily allowance of dairy today.

How I miss otlu peynir (note the missing last “i” – it is there only if you say “Van’in otlu peyniri” – can’t explain the grammar rules behind it, but just believe me ;-) ). The portière in the building where my parents live comes from Van and every time some relative visits him or he goes home, he brings my parents some otlu peynir. I especially love it on/between warm bread….
