Lunch at Mam i Teca, Barcelona
Local wild mushrooms served with peppers and asparagus at Mam i Teca.

Barcelona has one of the most cosmopolitan dining scenes in Europe, but for those who want to eat local and get a taste of Catalonian ingredients, there are a number of excellent restaurants where chefs adhere to the “km 0″ locavore approach promoted by the local Slow Food chapter. Here are some places to check out:

Mam i Teca: Chef and owner Alfons Bach has close relationships with local producers and sources most of his ingredients, including much of the beer and wine selection, from in or near Barcelona. Located in the Raval quarter, this was the first restaurant in town to adopt a km 0 approach and it enjoys the status of one of the city’s best casual restaurants. Carrer de la Lluna 4.

Allium: Ingredients sourced from artisans, as well as careful attention, go into each dish at this inviting contemporary space in Barri Gotic. On a recent trip, I had a lovely cold tomato cream soup with sprouts and a local craft beer. The menu includes both creative dishes and traditional ones, all of which pay homage to local agriculture and the seasons. Carrer del Call, 17; website.

Mercat de Santa Caterina

Monvinic: The menu at this wine bar near Universitat takes cues from Catalonian traditions and uses local, seasonal ingredients in its tapas and other dishes. The cellar, with all of Catalonia’s most important labels, as well as wines wines of the world, is among the most impressive in the city. Carrer de la Diputació, 249; website.

For local produce, cheeses, meats, and olive oils, check out the Mercat de Santa Caterina, offering an alternative to the oppressively touristy (and less km 0 inclined) Boqueria nearby. The organic food store Be Organic on Calle Flor de Lliri 4 on a narrow lane behind the Mercat also sells many local ingredients. For more km0 dining visit Restaurant Café 1907, Restaurant Casa Nostra, and Restaurant La Lluerna.

  • Hi, I was last week in Barcelona.

I’m from New Orleans, and telling you the truth I never tried better food than here.

WOW! I was really surprised when I was in Nello’s Bar, live music and eating one of the coolest Burger I ever tried! I love Barcelona!
