Contrary to popular belief, the area around the Vatican Museums is not a gastronomic wasteland. Like everywhere else in the city, you just have to know where to go to find a great meal. I love Da Cesare on Via Crescenzio, just of Piazza Cavour for traditional cucina romana. Dal Toscano on Via Germanico 2 blocks from the Museums serves hearty Tuscan food and a spectacular bistecca Fiorentina. L’Archetto at the other end of Via Germanico does great fritti and thin crust Roman style pizzas. For a quick slice, I go to Panificio Mosca on Via Candia, just 2 blocks north of the Museums. Turkish Doner Kebab on Via Ottaviano has borek for €1 and felafel for €3. Franchi on Via Cola di Rienzo is my spot for a panino or something more substantial at their tavola calda. And don’t forget the new market on Via Andrea Doria!

I had no idea that there were so many delightful choices of places to eat near the Vatican – could just camp out by St Peter’s and spend the weekend eating deliciousness! Seriously, need to spend more time on the other side of the Tiber!
July 4th, 2009 at 2:49 pmQuando vuoi! There are so many great places to eat in Prati. I dont get over there nearly enough and finishing Vatican tours at 6pm means the only places that are open for dinner are gross tourist traps. We’ll head over there for sure on your next trip!
July 5th, 2009 at 10:47 pmGreat ideas, Katie – and, as usual, fabulous pictures. Let me add one – “da Vito e Dina” at via degli Scipioni, 50 (closed Tuesdays) – down the block from the film club Azzurro Scipioni, that shows La Dolce Vita with English subtitles every Sunday at 5 p.m.
