Throughout our trip in Euskadi we met some really lovely people who gave us some really stellar tips. Maria, who we met through our mutual friends Hande and Theo of Vino Roma, gave us some of the best advice. She suggested taking a detour to Ermintxo, a little hotel and restaurant in Natxitua overlooking the Bay of Biscay. It seemed like the perfect stop after a day-long drive along the Basque Coast and it turned out to be one of our trip highlights.
Natxitua is microscopic and we had no trouble finding Ermintxo on a lane just off the town’s main street. When we pulled into the driveway, a stunning pastoral panorama opened up before us; cow pastures and forests stretched out below us, reaching right down to the sea.
We had some time to kill before dinner, so we drove down to Playa de Laga for some sun and a snooze on the beach. After our sun-drenched siesta, we headed back up to Ermintxo for some drinks on the patio overlooking the fields, forest, and sea. At 9, the restaurant opened and we had one of the best meals of the trip.
It started with these amazing fried appetizers, including perfectly done calamari, croquetas and chicken drumsticks. The crust was unbelievably light, thin and crisp.
Next came plump and juicy clams served in a buttery garlic sauce.
My main was quail with local mushrooms.
Mamma Parla went for the hake. Overall, the meal was excellent. The dessert (cheesecake) was forgettable. The meal, including 3 bottles of water and a bottle of rosado came to €100. A well appointed double room with ensuite bathroom was €55 for the night. Thanks, Marta, for giving us the gift of a lovely detour.
