A frittura mista can be roughly translated as “mixed fried things” and it’s never better than when said fried things are fish. A couple of weeks back, I met my friend Luigi and his girlfriend Elisa at Da Toto’ (aka Da Zio Enzo) in Palermo’s Vucciria Market for lunch. It was the hottest day of the year to date, a steamy 90 degrees, in the middle of a garbage strike no less, so we were definitely in need of something light and refreshing. Thankfully in Italy, fried food can be light, so we ordered a frittura mista di pesce and received a huge platter of cuttlefish, squid, prawns, and tiny fish that had been lightly dusted in flour and deep fried in olive oil. Squeeze a bit of lemon on it all and you’ve got the consummate summer lunch.

Yummy! There must be more to making fried food light than “lightly dusted and deep fried in olive oil” – I think there’s a Sicilian secret that they don’t share with the rest of the world!
June 17th, 2009 at 3:22 pmApologies to your Tuccino favorite in Polignano but it just lost its crown last Thursday after my Dinner at Chichibio in Polignano (check out the pix on my Twitter Profile)(next to the “Volare” singer statue). The dinner was just amazing, at a much lower cost to Tuccino according to my 2 expert Barese colleagues. They then took me and our UK guests to the other side of town for tops ice cream !
June 17th, 2009 at 4:32 pmWill now have to try some of your reco’s in Rome next week :0)
Ah! I know that place. Was supposed to go last time I was in down there but didnt make it. Yet another one for the list. Til then, Tuccino wears the crown:) Did you go to Super Mago for gelato??? Its soooo good!
June 18th, 2009 at 12:55 amNo we did not go to Super Mago (famous for his “Caffe Speciale”), instead we went to his competitor “Bella Blu”, known for his Melting Lindt chocolate ice cream (quite a blast, sharing the cup with a plain yoghurt flavored scoop), you should try it out !
