On Sunday I had my first gelato after nearly four months away from Rome. I stopped by Ciampini in Piazza San Lorenzo in Lucina for a quick cup and, in spite of my compulsion to photograph everything I eat before digging in, I couldn’t resist taking a little taste, then two. Before I knew it the coppetta was not exactly picture worthy. After such a long hiatus, one might think that my experience was somehow influenced by gelato deprivation, but I can say completely objectively that the chocolate and hazelnut cup I was served at Ciampini was some of the best I have ever had. The hazelnut was particularly spectacular and seemed like a sweet, buttery.

For more great gelaterie in Rome, check out Gelatone, Cremeria Monforte, Fatamorgana (3 locations), Ciuri Ciuri (3 locations), Gelarmony, and Old Bridge (don’t mind the bizarre website) .

You forgot Gelateria al Teatro, seriously the best. Hidden off of via dei Coronari. I think Old Bridge and Monteforte have had their run. . .

@Erica Ah yes! Gelateria al Teatro, is fantastic. Monforte’s cremolato di mandorla is the only reason I leave my house in the summer and I cant leave Prati after a tour of the Vatican without a gelato (doppia panna) from Old Bridge though, I agree, it used to be much better. Sometimes my judgement can be clouded by 4 hours of sexual harassment by the Vatican guards:) It happens to the best of us!

That’s what it’s called! I went to Gelateria al Teatro ages ago, and had (if I remember right) a very good granita. But I couldn’t remember where it was, exactly, or what it was called (although I should have done, because I did remember it being near a theatre). Time to go back, I think…

Gelato? Never heard of it. When I’m in Rome, nothing beats an Oreo McFlurry at the McDonalds at Piazza Della Rotunda!

  • Katie

@Haney Liar! Ive seen you tackle small children and steal their gelato. Glutton!

I’m a big fan of Gelatone in Monti as well. I also now have an affection for Giolitti since I got to go in their lab and make banana gelato with the Galavanting TV gals. All pure….just bananas, sugar, and milk!

Palazzo del Freddo! The oldest in Italy! And yummissimo. We gotta go soon!

[...] grainy texture of this and other offerings that makes me long for the creaminess of the gelato at Ciampini or the creativity of Fatamorgana. Nevertheless, the next time I’m in the neighborhood, [...]

Ciampini in Rome is the best! I was there in May and it was amazing! Can’t wait to go back
