Mondays are the worst. I didn’t always feel this way. My recent distaste for the first day of the work week is born out of an obsession for Litro, a wine bar in Monteverde Vecchio, the posh residential district above Trastevere. Litro, you see, is the greatest place on earth and Tuesday through Sunday, the unbelievably outgoing and friendly staff serves (mainly) natural wines, cocktails and snacks sourced from Lazio-centric deli DOL and other purveyors of traditional cured meats and cheeses. Monday’s giorno di riposo is a painful affair for Litro’s numerous and loyal regulars.
What makes Litro so appealing? The breakfast pastries and coffee for a start. There is penchant for sparkling wines aged on the lees and the selection of (mainly natural) vino changes subtly from week to week so as to engage regulars and stimulate the staff, who are experts at curating the dynamic list. Barman Pino Mondello teases tasty cocktails out of an ample array of mezcal, tequila’s rough and smokey cousin. Pino, a gelato aficionado, also makes fruit and booze-based sorbets to order, employing liquid nitrogen. The process is elegant and the result is an unmatched texture. Among the other assorted offerings, the bruschette and meat plates win.
