While researching for the Rough Guide Italy’s Basilicata chapter, my dad and I stayed at Hotel Sant’Angelo, a brand new 4-star in the Sassi. Crafted out of former stables, workshops, and dwellings, Sant’Angelo has 16 spacious cave-like (in Matera, that’s a good thing!) rooms which are palatial by European standards, each with attractive antique furnishings, WiFi, and patios overlooking the natural beauty of the Parco della Murgia.
During our stay, the service was impeccable. Each morning we were greeted by the young, enthusiastic staff who were engaged throughout the day advising fellow visitors on things to do, or simply chatting about the city and its history. At any given time, there were no fewer than 4 staff members available to help guests with whatever they needed.
Doubles cost e135 a night, a reasonable price for the quality of the accommodations and services offered.
