lahmacun_mangal

As you can see by the title of this post, I manage to be alliterative in Turkish, yet I remain almost completely illiterate in the language. It is quite amazing, really. Londra’da Lahmacun means Turkish pizza in London. Impressed? So was I. I just assumed that incredible lahmacun could be had only in Turkey, but at Mangal in Dalston, they serve up a wafer thin, crispy disk of minced lamb topped goodness.

Mangal is a common name for Turkish restaurants in London so don’t confuse this one with another just across the street. The address is 27 stoke Newington Road and the place doesn’t look like much. A few tables fill the storefront, as they mostly do take-away, so finding a place to sit to order lahmacun after lahmacun should be no problem. Pair them with a mug of homemade ayran and you might think for a moment you’ve been teleported to Anatolia.

Yumm! Now thanks to you I have a good Turkish restaurant in London tucked into my files for whenever we take that trip. Thanks!

Lisa, You will love this place. It is very simple and very good. The prices are also outrageous for London. Lahmacun is just 1.5GBP. It is really like being in Turkey.

    Dear Ms. Parla,

i am very grateful that you have found and wrote about, the best lahmacun in greater london, possiblly the entire great britain. my favorite bit about your review is the part about teleportation to anatloia. ( for some reason it reminded me of cem yilmaz’s film gora, not to be mixed with gorali.)

also, there is a rumor that in southeast london, Meze Mangal (another name with mangal, come on you can be a little bit creative haha) that lahmacun is pretty good and is the cheapest in london, therefore the best value.

    once again thank you,

    with kind regards, jozef a.

Lahmacun is one of my favorite Turkish specialties. It is simple however very tasty when it’s prepared/cooked correctly. I must try Mangal the next time I travel to London.

    Thanks,

  • Katie

Do check out Mangal. It really is very close to the real thing!
