I have just returned from London where I shamelessly gorged myself on all sorts of delicious and magical foods. I certainly didn’t achieve all of my culinary goals, but I did put a good dent into my interminable list of places to eat before I die (admittedly some dramatic wording but you should see my cholesterol levels–I’m just being a realist). Here are some places I enjoyed in London:
L’Anima: Amazing creative Italian in the heart of the City.
Galvin La Chapelle: Gorgeous French cuisine in Spitalfields.
Tayyabs: Great Pakistani in East London.
The Greenwich Union: excellent pub food, London’s best burger, and delicious beers.
The Hawksmoor: Famous Spitalfields steakhouse that should get equal praise for its meat and its starters like Tamworth belly ribs and Jerusalem artichoke salad.
Monmouth Coffee: Stellar coffee and rich, buttery pastries in Borough Market.
Canteen: great British food in several central locations.
Leila’s Shop: Damn good breakfasts in Shoreditch.
Antepliler: Good lahmacun and amazing künefe in Green Lanes.
Barrafina: Superb Soho tapas joint.
The Wells: A delightful gastropub in Hampstead.
Franco Manca: Neapolitan Pizza in the Brixton Market. Yeah, it’s not Naples, but I’ll take it.
Meze Mangal: London’s best lahmacun in Stoke Newington.

dear katie, you have a really nice list here, lots of delicious food/places. may i make one humble suggestion for your next trip? lahore kebab house on commercial road (or lahore restaurant, their branch, in st johns wood). i have heard so much about tayyab’s and i find it quite fascinating that there seem to be two camps- most Pakistanis, Lahoris in particular, all go to Lahore Kebab House or Lahore Restaurant, and all the non Pakistanis who know and love Pakistani food, like (New) Tayyab’s. Do try Lahore Kebab House and let me know how you feel. They have a new branch smack in the middle of St Johns Wood which I havent been to, but my Lahori and Karachiite friends swear by it. I so do want to try Franco Manca. x shayma
March 9th, 2010 at 7:07 pmim all over lahore kebab house on my next trip. keep the recs coming shayma!
March 10th, 2010 at 2:37 amYou must try J. Sheekey Restaurant or the J. Sheekey Oyster Bar (next door). J. Sheekey is the best Seafood place in London.
It attracks 80% londoners although there is a theater crowd on weekends. The Oyster Bar is new add-on and has their own kitchen/cooks. The Fish Stew is outstanding!
