byron

The accordion-fold business card at Byron lists all sorts of superlatives proclaiming the superiority of their famous burgers. In my opinon, however, it is the lukewarm “very decent burger” description that is most accurate . Byron’s good (but not mind-blowing) burgers are made from grass fed Scottish beef and are served on a large, soft, plain bun with lettuce, tomato, onion, and mayo. There are only three kinds to choose from–Classic, Cheese, Byron. Four if you count the Skinny (a burger served on a salad), which I don’t. Byron seems to have all the right ingredients for turning out a great burger from their open kitchen. Instead what they serve is good, but not great. The buns are big and bland and the patties are quite thin, resulting in a burger whose flavored is too toned down by the abundance of bread.

While I am still on the quest for an exceptional burger in London, I will certainly return to Byron in the future. The burger was good enough and the service was beyond attentive. The oreo milkshake wasn’t half bad, either. Byron has seven locations across the city. You can find a full listing of them here.

After extensive research, I think the only real burger in London is Haché, Inverness St Market (Camden). One wonders why it should be so difficult!

To the detriment of my coronary health, I have been looking for a great burger. So far, Lucky 7 (Westbourne Park), Diner (Shoreditch), and Haché (Camden) have all outdone Byron (which by far has the best service of the aforementioned places). I now have my sites set on Hawksmoor and will let you know how it goes.
