Most visitors to the port of Anzio are drawn to the ferry departures or fish restaurants. I came for the former, and stayed for Mahmut’s Kebab House. On my way to catch the ferry to Ponza a couple of weeks back, I spied Mahmut’s sandwiched between cafes and restaurants serving standard pescatarian fare. I was intrigued and upon my return, decided to postpone my return to Rome to try the place out. Always a sucker for a good Adana kebab, I ordered a platter of this spicy minced lamb meat specialty, served with pita, rice, bulgur, and sauces. Washed down with a Nastro Azzurro, it was well worth missing the train back to Rome and having to nap at the Anzio train station with a belly full of good Turkish fare, all for under 10 euros. Must return on a cooler day for kadayif and kaymak!

Wow. When I saw the picture, I thought you were covering some of your Turkish faves – never thought something so genuinely ethnic could have washed up on Lazio’s shores! Must try it out the next time I hop over to Ponza.

So nice to know authentic Turkish food is so close by, right? Where do you go in Rome?

Megan – I thought the same thing – who would have thought you could have such a turkish delight so close to Roma! KP – Ponza has been on my long list of places to visit when in Roma – just moved it to the top!
