This guest post comes from Parla Food intern Alston, who is studying at the University of California’s Rome center. He paid a visit to one of my favorite gelaterias, where the ingredients are genuine and natural.

“After a two-week gelato hiatus (borderline blasphemy for a study abroad student, I know), I made my way to Fior di Luna, a gelato shop in Trastevere. The blink-and-you-miss-it storefront on Via della Lungaretta gives way to a neat and tidy gelato case filled with seasonal fruit flavors, as well as pistachio, hazelnut, and several types of chocolate.

The first thing I noticed when I lifted my eyes from the colorful display was how friendly the staff was. They wore genuine smiles on their faces as they chatted with customers and offered samples. What a contrast to the more famous Giolitti or Grom! I perused the flavors, which included at least four different types of chocolate and some I had never seen before, like ginger.

I settled on a seasonal trio: persimmon, blueberry yogurt and concord grape. I sat at the elevated counter in the corner of the shop and enjoyed the intense, clean flavors. The persimmon was particularly surprising. It was subtle at first, then came the flavor burst, just like fruit itself. It provided a nice contrast to the super sweet and tangy concord grape gelato. Niether the persimmon nor the concord grape contain dairy (by definition they are sorbets), so I enjoyed the creamy texture of the blueberry yogurt even more. Fior di Luna had won me back over to the world of gelato after a two-week break.

Three flavors cost €3, perhaps a higher price than its competitors, but the proof is in the flavor. It’s a small price to pay for a quality product made from organic ingredients and served with a smile.”

  • I LOVE Fior di Luna! The tragedy of my visit to Rome last spring was that I did not know they had a closing day and so had NONE. :-(

  • In Rome there are many places where you can get a good ice cream probably this is the best one,but something even more tipycal from Rome, that you can find just on summer and just on some little kiosk is the “grattachecca” ice with the addtion of some fesh fruit and some syrup

    @franco i actually do not believe that there are many places in rome doing good gelato anymore. my definition of good gelato is that which is made without chemical additives, artificial colors/flavors/aromas and especially without vegetable oils. there are perhaps fewer than 50 gelaterias out of 2500 making true, natural product. here is a short list of who is doing it right http://www.parlafood.com/best-gelato-rome-guide/


  • I haven’t tried Fior di Luna yet but I love to buy one because I love gelato! Yummmm.
