The Three Breasted Woman From Frascati

The three breasted woman of Frascati goes by many names: La Pupazza di Frascati, pupazza frascatana, and “Miss Frascati”. She is a traditional cookie made from honey, flour and water and my friends and I discovered her today in a bakery in Frascati’s Piazza del Mercato. Evidently, she is a local goddess of abundance; two of her breasts give milk and the third gives wine. Frascati is one of Lazio’s main wine producing areas know for its crisp whites and, increasingly, its reds, so it’s no wonder that wine is part of the city’s mythology (it is also alleged that frascatani are nursed on wine and milk as infants). Although we had a huge Easter lunch awaiting us, we decided to try a pupazza; this was a terrible idea. These cookies are rock hard and almost impossible to break. To eat her, we broke off the limbs first, the had to slam the torso against an iron bench to break it into pieces. Suddenly the whole tradition was much more disturbing than quaint. But that didn’t stop us from celebrating when finally all that was left were three disembodied breasts to share…food is food, after all.
